Navi Mumbai gets ready for a smooth Ganapati Farewell

It’s that time of the year, when the city’s favorite deity comes calling. Ganesh Chaturti is celebrated with much festive fervor all over Mumbai. After showering the devotees with the blessings, the majestic Ganpati will depart for his heavenly abode from Tuesday. The civic authorities are leaving no stone unturned in preparation for the immersions.

The city police claims to have deployed adequate security personnel around the 111 immersion points. Navi Mumbai Police commissioner has stated that there is a deployment of around 2000 police officers, which includes women constables, one platoon of State Reserve Police force and 18 companies of home guards.  In the words of Deputy Commissioner of Police (HQ), Ashok Morale, “Apart from the 418 sarvajanik Ganpati mandals within NMMC jurisdiction, there are 60,205 household Ganpati idols. Of them, 14,419 idols will be immersed on Tuesday. A special police squad has been formed in both zones of the police commissionerate. Every police station has taken precaution to deploy sufficient personnel at vital road junctions and even volunteers from NGOs have been roped in.”

Traffic cops who are especially deployed to the sensitive locations around Navi Mumbai will manage traffic, which is of primary concern. For the immersions to go smoothly with adequate water, NMMC has arranged for its civic engineering  department to build a Gabion type wall in the ponds, which makes it easier for cleaning after immersions.

According to TOI, Deputy Municipal commissioner J Sinnarkar has said, “We have alerted the fire brigade, ambulance and electricity department to meet any emergency situation during the immersion.” He also added that adequate personnel, which include volunteer ad security guards, would be provided at the immersion points.
