NMMC: Expert search and rescue team to be formed in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will conduct an intense training session to develop specialized search and rescue team. This team will be in the forefront for rescuing victims of collapsed buildings. With a view to shorten the current long hours of wait for rescue, the proposed team is based on the lines of elite National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

The training program has already commenced at Nerul Fire Station from December 2 to 21st. Successful candidates will be awarded with certificates from Trainers at NDRF. If fully implemented and organized, NMMC will be counted as the first civic body to bring together a specialized rescue team. The composition of the team will be about 30 members including medical practitioners and   civil defense personnel. One of the objectives of the expert team will be to provide basic life support for emergency victims. The funding of this project is taken care of by the Central government in association with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Inspector Promod Kumar from NDRF said,” We are here to train the volunteers on improving ambulance response, medical first responder, and collapse structures search and rescue operation in a scientific manner”.

A UNDP Project coordinator has stated, “Other cities that will be conducting this training program are Madurai, Bhubaneshwar, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijaywada, Vishakhapatnam, Shimla and Gangtok,”

The list of organizations taking part in this long awaited training program is as follows:

a. NMMC

b. NDRF

c. UNDP

d. United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

e. Central government.
