RJIL teams up with NMMC for introducing 4G towers in the city

Navi Mumbai’s wait for 4G towers is soon to get over. Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. (RJIL), formerly known as Infotel Broadband, has entered into a tie-up with Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to install ground based towers, to facilitate the launch of the eagerly awaited 4G services.

In a bid to launch 4G services in the city, RJIL has made a 20-year deal, under which it has identified 126 locations in Navi Mumbai for hoisting the towers. The company will be installing 8,000 of these in-house designed towers in Mumbai and suburbs.

“RJIL will give free bandwidth for CCTVs and plant live fiber across the city. It has also agreed to pay the rent as well as necessary charges, as per the government’s ruling”, Sagar Naik, mayor of NMMC, said while conforming the development. The final official approval, however, will be passed in the NMMC’s general meeting to be held on February 15. RJIL is also in talks with the Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation to get into a similar deal.

According to the deal, RJIL will bear the whole cost of setting up and working on the infrastructure, while NMMC will look after the maintenance. Each tower will occupy about 2×2 meters of space and Reliance will pay rent for the same. The company has also requested for permission to drill and lay optic fiber across the whole stretch of Navi Mumbai, for which it will pay a security deposit of Rs. 50/meter.

The 4G towers will serve one more purpose – surveillance cameras will be hosted on these fibre-optic backed towers, which will be linked to a central location at the police commisionarate office, enabling them to keep an eye on the security as well as law and order in the city.
