State cabinets give a green signal to power projects in Navi Mumbai

Recognizing the need for more electricity supply in Navi Mumbai region, the state government has approved a plan, which focuses on power distribution infrastructure. This plan is made for seven cities, which includes Navi Mumbai and Panvel.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan cleared the plan that costs about Rs. 1,084 crore. The aim of the plan is to develop 15 new sub stations in the Navi Mumbai region. These new developments will require supporting supply mechanisms, which has been duly included in the plan.

Once the plan has been completely implemented, it is expected to relive the energy crisis that Navi Mumbai currently faces. The city faces approximately seven hours of load shedding especially in rural Panvel. The new developments will give respite to the residents. The substation division is as follows:

  • 5 for Panvel, and;
  • 10 for Navi Mumbai.

It has also been decided to run the existing substations belonging to Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) located in Panvel at full capacity. According to an unidentified source “The mega project to upgrade and strengthen the infrastructure facility will cover all city nodes and Panvel. The plan is to be implemented in the next three years”.

Apart from the distribution infrastructure plan, MSEDCL also has plans to have many layers of both high tension and low tension wires across the city. Around 666 new transformers are to be set up upon completion of this plan, of which 429 will be in Panvel and 237 in Navi Mumbai.

Cities that are in the offing for similar plans include Pune, Nashik, Ojhar, Kolhapur, and Sinnar.
