Technical goof up prints Ganesh Naik’s image on a woman’s registration slip

Technical glitches during election voter registrations in India are a common occurrence. However, a recent incident, which happened in Koparkhairane, highlights the hilarious situation these might throw up. Thane’s guardian minister Ganesh Naik found his photo printed on a voter registration slip belonging to one Neela Dineshchandra Shah, residing in sector 12, Koparkhairane.Ms. Neela, who stays in the same neighborhood as MLA Ganesh Naik, in Balaji Garden’s complex, is surprised that her name even came up in the rolls. She said,” After shifting from Sharjah some 13 years ago, I have been staying in Balaji Gardens. I have never voted in the elections held here. I do not have a voter’s ID card nor have I submitted any application to include my name in the new electoral roll. So I don’t know how my name figures in the voters’ list of Balaji Gardens residential complex.” Interestingly, the updated list also includes the name of Subhadrabai Ramchandra Naik, the deceased mother of Ganesh Naik.

Since the incident involves a prominent politician, it is sure to get the administrative machinery red faced. Conspiracy theories have already started to abound about possible bogus voter lists. According to Shiv Sena corporator Vithal More,” Prima facie, the photo mix-up incident appears to be a technical glitch, by the concerned agency appointed by the Election Commission for voter registration. However, politically speaking, this could be a conspiracy on pre-planning for bogus voting. It is only because MLA Naik’s picture was wrongly printed on the Shah’s registration slip, that the news went viral. If another woman’s picture was printed on her registration slip, it would have probably gone unnoticed and led to bogus voting.”

Thane Tehsildar, Vikas Patel, has stated that the tehsildar office staff has been instructed to rectify the error at the earliest by filling up Form No. 8 and fixing the proper photograph.
