Vashi bags the infamous title of ‘No.1 Traffic Violation Place’ in Navi Mumbai

This is one honor that Vashi can do without. It has come at the top place for maximum Motor Vehicles Act violations, under the traffic department for this year, from January to September 2013.

The traffic unit has been plagued with illegal vehicle parking during evenings. In the past nine months, the total numbers of cases registered were 26,918, which give a good picture of how grim the problem is. The main spot of trouble is the main Vashi road that connects Koparkhairane and Ghansoli. Even the adjacent Palm Beach road is not free of such incidences. Traffic cops often have to deal with jumping signal and over speeding, with little effective results. In a recent incident, two constables gave chase to a three-wheeler from their bike, but were unable to stop it. The violators continue to defy the law with impunity.

Of late, traffic personnel have resorted to extreme steps like standing in the middle of the road to stop the offending vehicles, putting their lives in danger. The department has the onerous task of managing one of the biggest traffic circles at Kalamboli, which includes NH4 and NH4B national highways.

The traffic scorecard of Vashi reads as follows:

No parking: 14,327

Signal jumping: 4,659

Violations against autos: 2,427

Riding without helmets: 1,089
